Born into a bike racing family, Josh has been on wheels of some sort since he was 2 ˝ years!
Five times Irish Mini Moto Champion including two ‘doubles’ between the ages of nine and twelve, Josh moved to big bikes just after his 13th birthday in May 2007.
A pole position, fastest lap and a win at his first Aprilia 125 race meeting set the trend for a very brief but dominant period in both the Aprilia and GP 125 Clubman classes in Ireland. The youngest ever winner of a National GP 125 race in Ireland in Mid 2008 at 14 years, was followed up with a record breaking win at Anglesey in Wales later that year.
Ireland’s only Red Bull Rookies Moto GP cup entrant had a year plagued with technical difficulties, but the experience gained of so many top European tracks was to stand him in good stead for the challenge ahead.
2009 saw the youngster take to the Supersport 600 class in the German IDM championship as part of Gerry Bryce’s Racedays team under the guidance of Ex GP star Jeremy McWilliams. The formation of Jeremy’s ‘Superbike Academy’, meant Josh made a swift and impressive transition to life in the fast and furious Supersport class with early season European testing programme.
In a record breaking year the quiet 14 year old student was the youngest ever point scorer in his first IDM Supersport race and just after his 15th birthday in May 2009, was the first ever podium finisher with a 2nd and 3rd at Nurburgring. Despite missing some races with a Salzburgring crash, Josh came back strong at season end at Hockenheim and secured 13th in the series.
An end of season test at Almeria in Spain in November and another there in March proved a great confidence builder for the season. A test on the new FTR Moto 2 bike against some of the top world stars showed tremendous potential in Josh
Josh took on the challenge of the World Superbike paddock in 2010 in the European Superstock 600 championship class as the sole UK /Irish entrant. He competed on Honda and then Kawasaki machinery at a number of new tracks and even without a testing budget, secured 10th in the series in his first year. The highlights were undoubtedly setting pole position after just turning 16 years in Brno having been fastest in every session. (Youngest UK/ Irish rider to achieve this) He managed another front row start at Nurburgring. He led both races but misfortune in both stole his chance of podiums. His final race of the year at Magny Cours in France was another highlight. He battled against the odds with mechanical issues in practice to secure his best finish in 4th place despite never having seen the place before.
Changing teams and bike for 2011, Josh will campaign a Yamaha R6 in the European Superstock 600 championship supplied by Chris Wilkinson of Weightmaster Trailers Ltd of Scunthorpe. A keen racer himself, Chris has made his ex Beowulf Superstock 600 R6 available to Josh for the season and Josh is delighted that Andrew Stone is preparing the engines and suspension. He is also delighted that Andrew Williams will be his crew chief and mechanic for the season. Updates will be posted in the blog or via twitter and facebook feeds.
